I found this one a little bit difficult to get into at first. It was probably because I was reading it on my kobo and it wasn’t an epub file.
But once I got into it, I did really enjoy it. I finished it at 4 am, which is probably a good indication of how much I enjoyed it.
The main characters, Viola and Roze, both hate each other but are forced to team up. The Queen, Roze’s mother, has order Viola’s death and Roze believes shes the only person who can solve his father’s murder. In order to do this they must pretend to be engaged, but as far as the court is concerned Viola is to low-born to marry a prince and to everyone else in the caverns, Viola is a traitor.
I did struggle with Hamilton’s writing style a little bit, having to reread a sentence multiple times to understand it or reading a line that made zero sense but was explained a few lines later.
The worst part though was the big twist or reveal. To me, it felt unearned, like it didn’t make sense. Even with a monumental twist, you should be able to look back at the story and go “OH, that makes sense” or “that’s why xyz happened” and I didn’t feel that in this book.
If i’m completely honest the ending was rushed. The reveal happened in the last 100 or so pages and allowed the FMC to figure everything out, but she left the readers behind and nothing seemed to be explained properly.
Overall, I did enjoy this story and I liked it. It just seemed to leave a lot out, which is a shame. It had the makings of a five-star read.
